Gens de Bretagne: when Breton citizens stand up to protect their territory

Bretaigne DAO is not alone on the ground.

We are neither an island, nor a sect, nor a start-up detached from reality.

We are part of a much wider movement: the citizens of Brittany taking their destiny back into their own hands, from the grassroots, through collective effort and practical action.

Among these active forces, one has caught our attention — and deserves yours too: Gens de Bretagne.

Who are “Gens de Bretagne”?

Founded in early 2026, this non-political citizens’ collective has set itself a clear mission: to protect Breton territory — on land, in the air and at sea — against any threat that harms its environment, its heritage or the health of its living world.

They are neither a political party nor a business. They are a citizens’ alliance open to everyone: Bretons from here and elsewhere, Bretons at heart, individuals, associations and federations.

Their credo? United, to speak with one voice.

Their priority campaign: no to giant wind turbines in southern Brittany

The collective first took on a pressing issue: the planned PENNAVEL offshore wind farm off southern Brittany.

As early as 14 February 2026, at the large gathering in Quiberon, they launched a charter of mutual commitment for candidates in the municipal elections.

The aim: to have the project abandoned.

The result today: 20 of the 26 elected mayors in the Pays d’Auray have signed the charter.

A remarkable result that shows citizen mobilisation pays off — when it is serious, well informed and persistent.

“Some preferred to defer their response, needing more time and information before taking a position.”

The collective embraces this educational approach and is now organising information meetings across the area’s 28 municipalities.

A Breton legacy of resistance

Gens de Bretagne is not starting from nothing. They are part of a long history of successful campaigns:

1975: 15,000 demonstrators march towards Erdeven → the nuclear power station project is abandoned.

1980: 100,000 people mobilise in Plogoff → the nuclear power station project is abandoned.

2007: the “Le Peuple des Dunes” collective brings together 12,000 people on Kerhillio beach → the offshore sand extraction project is abandoned.

2026: Gens de Bretagne takes up the baton. Against the giant wind turbines of southern Brittany and Belle-Île-en-Mer.

Their call is unambiguous: “Breton, wake up! Shake off your torpor! Make your voice heard!”

And other campaigns are already in their sights

Gens de Bretagne will not stop at wind turbines. They are already looking towards:

Enforcement of the Coastal Law;

Mineral exploration projects in Brittany and Pays de la Loire (EPONA, TARANIS, BELENOS);

And all the dangers to come.

Why does Bretaigne DAO welcome this initiative?

Because we share the same underlying philosophy: grassroots citizen action, a refusal to let decisions be imposed without debate, and a desire to protect our Breton land — each with our own resources and methods.

We are not doing the same thing, but we are moving in the same direction: towards a Brittany that no longer simply endures, but decides, protects and invents.

While Gens de Bretagne acts on the ground, in public meetings and by challenging elected representatives, Bretaigne DAO is building digital tools for direct governance, free currency and radical transparency.

Two different approaches. One shared desire: to regain the power to act.

What we can build together,

Bretaigne DAO is not going to replace collectives such as Gens de Bretagne.

But we can think about practical ways to complement one another.

Their members could one day use our decentralised voting tools to consult their supporters on strategies for action.

BreizhAl, our artificial intelligence dedicated to Breton law and history, could help them analyse complex legal texts such as the Coastal Law or mining codes. And ELURC, our independent territorial currency, could one day help fund their actions transparently, without relying on bank or public subsidies.

In the meantime, we can already pass on their calls to action, because a territory that defends itself against giant wind turbines is a territory learning to govern itself.
